Garden Route von West nach Ost

Für die Gegend um Kapstadt und die Garden Route hatten wir ca. 2 Wochen eingeplant. Letztendlich waren wir aber doch bedeutend schneller. Denn Kapstadt haben wir gleich komplett auf das Ende der Reise verschoben (weil wir ja schon am 2. Tag unser Fahrertraining mit unserem Defender hatten und wir auch so schnell wie möglich raus zum Campen wollten). Also führte unsere Route von Stellenbosch zum Kap der Guten Hoffnung…

… und von dort immer der Küste entlang über Kleinmond...

zum Tsitsikama National Park, einem – wenn nicht DEM – Highlights der Garden Route. Wir übernachteten direkt am Meer und wanderten eine 9 Kilometer Kombination aus Regenwald und Küste bis zu den herrlich erfrischenden Wasserfällen.

Am „Ende“ der Garden Route liegt der Addo Elephant Park, wo nicht nur Elefanten, sondern auch den Rest der Big Five (Elefant, Büffel, Nashorn, Löwe und Leopard) zu finden sind – und durch eine Erweiterung des Parks mit einem Küstenstreifen inklusive Teile des angrenzenden Meeres proklamiert dieser Park sogar die Big Seven zu haben (nämlich zusätzlich den Grauwal und den Weißen Hai).

Wir haben an den 2 Tagen, die wir hier verbracht haben, immerhin 3 der Big 5 gesehen (riesige Elefantenherden, Büffel und Löwen). Und dann gab es da noch unzählige (Riesen-) Schildkröten und Millionen von „Pillendrehern“, die im Park immer Vorfahrt haben. Immer wieder weisen Schilder darauf hin, die Käfer nicht zu überfahren, die permanent die Straßen zu überqueren scheinen. Ihren Spitznamen haben die Mistkäfer deshalb bekommen, weil sie Kugeln aus Büffel- oder Elefantenkot vor sich her rollen, die grösser sind als sie selbst. Diese Kugeln dienen ihnen als Brutträger und Nahrung in ihren unterirdischen Kammern.

For the area around Cape Town and the Garden Route we thought that this will take us 2 weeks however we were faster. Cape Town we have postponed till the end of our journey as we had our training with our 4x4 Defender already on the second day of our journey which was outside Cape Town and we wanted to go camping as quickly as possible. Therefore, our tour was leading us directly from Stellenbosch (Michaela comment: great wine tasting area – maybe we tasted a bit too much from time to time :o) ) to the Cape of Good Hope. And from there we drove along the coast to Kleinmond to Tsitsikama National Park – one of the highlights of the Garden Route if not even THE highlight. We camped right at the sea and went on a 9 km hike through rainforest as well as coastal shores till we reached refreshing waterfalls.

At the ´end´ of the Garden Route there lies the Addo Elephant Park in which you can see more than only elephants. You can find all Big Fives (elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard) and as the extended the boundaries of the park including a coastal area this park says that they have the Big Seven by including whale and shark.

The two days we stayed there we had seen 3 of the Big Five (huge elephant herds, buffaloes and lions). There were plenty of gigantic turtles and millions of beetles - the flightless dung beetle, the female constructs and rolls the ball and the male is following. They love buffalo and elephant dung which is important for breeding as well as food. There are plenty road signs telling you to take care of them and to drive carefully so that you don’t kill them while driving. The only problem is there is so much dung on the roads and thus beetles passing the road that it is hard not to kill them.
